I have long complained about the HVAC cost of heating my home during the winter.
- We live in a region where the winter can be quite something to deal with.
It starts about late October and lasts at least until April. That’s a lot of cold weather. But there is also all the snow and ice to contend with as well. I’m thankful to have my own home and a good HVAC furnace in order to keep that home warm. It’s just that it costs so much money to heat that house. It’s a fairly large home and has been around since the 60’s. It didn’t really dawn on me until recently that I needed to help the HVAC in order to bring down the cost of the utilities in the winter. With an older home, even though it’s got great bones, there is still some settling. And with that, comes plenty of places where the house is no longer as tight as it once was. So to help lower the HVAC costs, I had to do my part to seal up the house better. I was able to find a lot of loose spots using a temperature gun. This thing showed me exactly the location where the heated air from my house was leaking out. Once I got those spots buttoned up, I also made sure that all the weather stripping was also in good shape. I had to replace a bit of it along with one of the storm doors. But it was all worth it. I have saved over 20 percent on the heating bills this winter.
